Cool feature: One-half of all blue-footed boobies nest in the Galapagos, making this a great place to see them. ![]() And, of course, their feet are a beautiful sky blue. Their beak is a dark grayish blue, and the irises of the eyes are a pale yellow. Color: Their wings are brown and come down to a point at their butts (what? I like the word). Their head and neck are salt and pepper, but their bellies and underside are a vibrant white.Lenth: roughly 32 inches (81 cm), with a wingspan of about 5 ft (1.5 m).Okay, so maybe they don’t verbalize their quips, but you can see it in their small, beady eyes! The boobies walk funny, whistle and honk, and make sarcastic remarks at the tourists, thus earning their name. The blue-footed booby’s name originally came from the Spanish work ‘ bobo‘ meaning ‘stupid fellow.’ □Īs many of you already know, the word ‘booby’ was used in old English to refer to a dimwit, lunk-head, crazy person, clown, idiot, simpleton, or all around silly fellow. If you’re like me and never really grew up… well, then you may still have ridiculous difficulty containing your mirth when you hear such lovely words.Ĭonsequently, you end up embarrassing “classy” people that you may coincidentally be acquainted with (because you clearly would not spend time with such boring folk by choice). If you were ever young, you surely remember laughing like an idiot every time someone said butt, booby or fart. The blue feet and quizzical looks made quite the impression, but the name was what really sold it. The first time I saw them was in the Galapagos when I was only ten. A group of boobies is known as a “hatch,” “trap,” or “congress.” Their nostrils are permanently sealed shut. The blueness of their feet comes from their diet of fresh fish.
